Alex Easton MLA has welcomed news from the DSD Minister to an Assembly written question he had submitted on a time table for work to start on the public realms scheme in Holywood.

Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:

“It is important that we try to get the actual work on the ground started as quickly as possible, that we work with local businesses within Holywood so that they are fully aware of the timetable and that the work is done in such away as not to affect business and is done to the best possible standard. The public realms work will not only make Holywood even more attractive, but will hopefully also attract more business the town and help the local economy. I welcome the DSD Ministers start date of late March 2014.

To ask the Minister for Social Development to outline the timetable for the start of the public realms works in Holywood.

Over the past 18 months my Department has been working with representatives from North Down Borough Council, town centre management and the local community to develop a major public realm scheme for Holywood. The works will address all aspects of street design including paving, kerbstones, street furniture, lighting and planting. The total value of the works is estimated to be £2.4 million, with my Department investing £1.4 million and Council investing £1 million. A contractor is due to be appointed in December 2013, onsite construction work will start in late March early April 2014 and the scheme will take one year to complete.
